FIELD NOTE 01 / DESK FIT

How to compare monitor footprints on a small desk

A screen’s diagonal doesn’t tell you how much desktop it takes. Measure the footprint, place the other things you need, then check the whole arrangement.

Start with three honest rectangles

For the monitor, measure the width and depth of a rectangle covering the screen and stand from above. Include overhang that matters to your space. For the keyboard, use its physical dimensions. For the mouse, reserve the area you want for movement, such as your mouse mat.

Desk Fit treats each rectangle as occupied. Positions start at the back-left corner: x measures across the desk, y measures toward the front.

One 100 × 50 cm desktop, three layouts

This is the tool’s “small-space desk” example. The measurements are illustrative, not specifications for real products. Each layout uses the same 5,000 cm² desktop.

Why A fails with space still available

In these positions, A’s monitor overlaps the keyboard by a 44 × 1 cm strip and the mouse space by 20 × 4 cm. The mouse rectangle also hangs 2 cm past the right edge and 4 cm past the front.

The tool counts occupied area inside the desk, with overlaps counted once. For A, that is 2,240 + 660 + 690 − 44 − 80 = 3,466 cm². The clipped mouse area is 30 × 23 = 690 cm². That leaves 1,534 cm², or 30.68%, unoccupied. Free patches elsewhere do not resolve those conflicts.

Compare what you gain and give up

The current layout leaves 2,650 cm² free. B leaves 2,562 cm²: 88 cm² less, while reserving a wider monitor footprint and more mouse area through a smaller keyboard and shallower monitor rectangle. The tool rounds the displayed percentages.

Change one dimension or position at a time. If a warning disappears, check the actual arrangement with a tape measure. A green result means these rectangles fit; it does not assess ergonomics, arm mounting, load capacity, or cable and wall clearance.
